  • Wild Weather!

The weather was wild at GLP today, with flooding, high winds, at least one boat breaking loose in the lagoon, and some beach toys and tubes probably lost forever.

As rain poured through our east and south facing windows, strong easterly gusts swept across our porch on the Boardwalk, blowing chairs, swings, and kids tubes off the porch and down the beach. We eventually recovered the chairs, and one tube was found on the breakwater at the entrance to the lagoon.

We have a beautiful bench on our dock in the lagoon, very special to me as my daughter built it herself and gave it to me for Mother's Day one year. When we got reports that a sailboat had broken loose from it's mooring and was up against our boats, I tried to peer through the heavy rain to see what was happening. I didn't see the sailboat, but my daughter noticed her bench had blown across the dock, and was almost in the water.

I wouldn't have gone out in the lightning storm to rescue anything else, but I made my way in pretty deep puddles through the yard, across the road, and out to the dock, where I dragged the bench back onto the dock, and tied it to the post with one of the lines, nervously watching the lightning as I trudged back through the water.

There were trees down, especially a large one on Beach Road, and many roads were flooded, at GLP, in Groton and Mystic, and in Stonington.  We lost power at GLP for a few hours, but it was restored around 3:00.

Channel 3 news reported from GLP at 6:00. Here is a link: http://www.wfsb.com/weather/19918655/detail.html
