August 2006: Some insurance companies have notified homeowners that are within 3/4 of a mile from the shore that their insurance policy will be dropped unless they install storm shutters on all windows. Andover Insurance has gotten an okay from the insurance commissioner to do this.
With many homeowners up in arms locally, CT state attorney general Richard Blumenthal has started an investigation, and now there will be a forum on Sept. 21 to address homeoner's questions:
Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Susan Cogswell will conduct a public forum Sept. 21 on new coastal insurance mandates.
The forum is set to run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Groton Inn & Suites, said Amy Lazzaro, Cogswell's chief of staff.
Cogswell and her staff will speak about the controversy surrounding Andover Companies' new practice of requiring storm shutters for homeowners within three-quarters of a mile of the coast. Cogswell approved Andover's request for the change earlier this summer but she and Andover agreed Thursday to put the practice on hold for 90 days while she studies the issue.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell had directed Cogswell to reverse or delay the Andover decision.
